Hi friend,
Your home should restore you. But most of us are unknowingly filling our spaces with products that do the opposite.
Here are five things that might be harming you — and what you can do about them.
1. Paraffin candles
The problem: Many mass-market candles still use paraffin — a petroleum byproduct. When burned, paraffin can release unwanted compounds into indoor air. Most brands are not required to disclose what is in them.
What to do: Switch to 100% natural wax candles with a full ingredient list — start with Chiije candles, or the Discovery Set if you want to smell first.
2. Synthetic air fresheners
The problem: Many conventional air fresheners rely on undisclosed fragrance blends and solvents. If a label only says "fragrance," you cannot see what you are breathing.
What to do: Use reed diffusers with plant-based bases — or simply open a window. Fresh air is free.
3. Non-stick cookware
The problem: Some non-stick coatings have raised health and environmental concerns. If you want fewer unknowns in the kitchen, choose materials you recognise.
What to do: Prefer cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic when you can. Longevity aside, it avoids the coatings used on many non-stick pans.
4. Plastic storage containers
The problem: Some plastics can transfer substances into food, especially when heated. "BPA-free" is not a full safety guarantee.
What to do: Invest in glass or stainless steel containers. They're safer, they last forever, and they look better.
5. Conventional cleaning products
The problem: Most cleaners contain harsh chemicals that linger in the air long after you've finished cleaning.
What to do: Make your own with vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and essential oils. Or buy from brands that list every ingredient.
The takeaway: You don't have to fix everything at once. Start with one swap. Then another. Your home will thank you.
With care, The Chiije Team
